The Superior String Alliance is an organization of professional musicians, music educators, classical music lovers, and friends. First developed in 1983, it has dedicated itself to sponsoring both young performer string camps and first-flight concerts and recitals, and to promoting the health of classical music in the central upper Midwest. The Festival Orchestra, composed of top orchestral and chamber performers from across the country, offers internships for young instrumentalists interested in pre-professional coaching and performance. Located at the Page Center in Little Lake, Michigan, in the heart of the Upper Peninsula, it features a rare blend of exceptional music, professional attention to detail, family-comfortable instruction, and easy companionship, in a setting of natural beauty and rustic comfort on a Canadian Shield lake-and-forest campground.
The Intermediate String Camp provides a four-day period of string instruction, small-and-large group practice and performance, recreation, relaxation, and camping fun for ages 8 to 11 (commonly to grade 6) musicians. The faculty comprises professional musicians conspicuous for their combination of sound pedagogy, emphasis on fundamentals, gradual discipline, and long experience. Individual attention is the order of the day, not just in music but in living and learning how to live. The ambience is locally famous for old-fashioned campfood, friendliness, and remarkable musical progress in brief time. The results have often been amazing.
The Advanced String Camp builds on the foundation established there in a six-day session generally for ages 12 to 17. Music also takes precedence here, and both individuals and groups have shown phenomenal growth in technique and musicianship. But there is time for recreation and socializing, within and between groups, modeling guidelines for adult behavior. Again, the spirit of the camp has garnered high approval; visitors and parents comment repeatedly about the air of health and confidence pervading the camp and campers. Campers bring sound experience back to their school orchestras; some have entered top-level conservatories and schools of music.
